Stunning copper sculpture by the noted Central Coast artist Michael Hannon. Graceful and moving the sculpture is titled “Athena” and bears a plaque with the artist’s name. The sculpture is mounted on a iron base and rotates. Please be sure and have a look at the other Michael Hannon sculpture’s our gallery has on display at the moment.
A artist statement follows:
At Cal State Long Beach, I majored in jewelry and metal smithing (with metal smithing being my main focus). I learned how to hammer metal onto steel stakes and make traditional objects such as teapots, chalices and silverware.
I continued working with metal as a model maker at Toyota’s design studio.
After moving to the Central Coast, a friend gave me some salvaged copper gutters. I experimented with these while researching how the Statue of Liberty was made using copper sheets. From there, I came up with my own process for making human figures and birds.
