John Thornton noted Realist Pennsylvania Artist 1998 oil

A large oil on canvas by the noted American artist John Thornton. It portrays a sick man being laughed at by a young girl. I believe it’s part of his Crime series. It is signed and dated lower left. In generally good overall condition with some minor paint loss and abrasions.
A brief bio:
John Thornton graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1980. While in school, Thornton focused on realism, winning the Cecilia Beaux Memorial Prize for portraiture. Continuing to explore realism following graduation, Thornton developed a new aesthetic in his Cubist Series, breaking up the picture plane and emphasizing plastic objects & color-rich spaces. His achievement earned him a solo exhibition of the Cubist Series at the Delaware Art Museum in 1989 and inclusion in the juried Contemporary Philadelphia Art Now show at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He was then inspired to return to realism after being held up at gunpoint with his wife, Nancy, and painted the Crime Series
