Beautiful Calamander and brass box by the noted firm of George Betjemann and Sons, London. Likely manufactured in the third quarter of the 19th century. Features Bramah lock and key on the top and bottom drawer. The locks function but are stiff and awkward. The locks are signed with the firm name. Stunning grain to the wood veneer with brass inset monogram on top. There is a secret compartment on each side, which is released by a button on top. Another secret compartment is behind the mirror on the inside of the top, which is accessed by a release under the top lid. The box is in good overall condition for its age although there is a crack in the top and the front drawer has a warped front, the velvet liner has wear and losses, and the mirror has silver lining loss, please see the detailed photos. The box is 150 years old or so and has wear and tear, but is a beautiful example of Victorian English craftsmenship.
