A wonderful statue with great patina by the noted artist Edward Fenno Hoffman III who died in 1991. This sculpture is pictured in his book and titled boy with turtle and dated 1952 in the book. This bronze was cast two years later and is dated and signed 1954. His book also depicts the making of the second hoffman we have. A full bio is available in his book, which I will photocopy for the buyer. This sculpture has obviously been outdoors and has a wonderful rich patina.
A brief bio is from his NY TImes obituary:
Edward Fenno Hoffman 3d, a sculptor of portraits, children and religious themes, died on Friday at Bryn Mawr (Pa.) Hospital. He was 74 years old and lived in Wayne, Pa.
His wife, the former Nadine Kalpaschnikoff, said he died of leukemia.
Mr. Hoffman, who was born in Philadelphia, attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and worked briefly as an assistant to the sculptor Paul Manship. His first New York exhibition was in 1956 at the Grand Central Art Gallery, which represented him for the rest of his life.
His work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. His public sculptures include an “Ascension” at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, a “Descent From the Cross” at St. John’s Church in Southampton, L.I., and a “Pieta” at the American Cathedral in Rome.
